What
is Suzuki Guitar?
The term refers
to the method and philosophy of teaching music founded by Dr. Shinichi
Suzuki. In his words, "- - - the mother tongue approach - - -", or simply
stated, all children speak the language of their mothers. This approach
to learning the Classical Guitar directly involves the parent/coach, usually
the mother, in the learning process. It is this approach that makes teaching
music to the very young possible. Back to Top
How
will I know if the guitar is the right instrument for my child?
Children, like
all people, have preferences that cannot be explained. We all like particular
colors, prefer certain foods and, where music is concerned, we each take
to the sound of a particular instrument. That a child likes the sound,
shape and feel of a given instrument over another is an excellent indicator
that it is the right choice. Back to Top
Should
I insist that my child learn the instrument of my choice?
This will more
than likely produced less than desirable results. At best a child will
pursue the instrument to please the parent, however it is unlikely that
they would find any real joy in the endeavor.
Many parents
have made attempts to live their music lives through their children only
to have the child quit music all together. I would strongly discourage
this approach. Back to Top
Can
we try guitar for a short term to see if my child likes it?
Experience has
shown that approaching music from this mindset leads to repetitive quiting.
The child will more often than not quit when they find there is more effort
required that meets the eye. If allowed to do so, they will more that likely
quit the next instrument as well, and so on until the parent stops buying
them. The end result is multiple starts with little or no results. The
real tragedy is the child has inadvertently been taught to quit.
The best approach
to learning guitar, or any musical instrument is by way of commitment.
The combination of a child that wants to learn, a committed parent, and
a competent teacher who loves teaching is one that consistantly produces
results that brings smiles to the faces of all.Back to Top
Enrollment FAQs
Should
my child take private or group lessons?
The program
for children offered at Soundboard Studios consists of both private and
group lessons. All students receive weekly private lessons, and are required
(except adults) to participate in group and ensemble play as scheduled.
The classical
guitar is a solo instrument not normally associated with band or orchestral
groups. Because children need to learn to play in a group setting the group
and ensemble experience is imperative. Back to Top

Do
you accept adult students?
Although children
are the primary focus at Soundboard Studios, a limited number of adult
students are accepted. Back to Top
How
are classes scheduled?
The studio operates
on a semester schedule that coincides very close to local schools. During
each calendar year there is a fall, summer, and spring semester. The fall
and spring semesters are 18 weeks long while the summer session is 9 weeks.

Is
there an enrollment cuttoff date?
No! While we
prefer each new student enroll at the begining of the semester during the
specified week, we know that this is not always practical or possible.
Therefore new students are accepted at almost any time during a term. If
enrollment is sought very late in a given term it may be suggested that
the student start is the next term. Late enrollment costs are prorated
to some extent. Back to Top
Is
there a waiting list?
Yes! If the
studio is filled to capacity and you still wish to enroll you will be placed
on a waiting list. You will be kept informed of your place on the list
periodically or as change occur
The Fayetteville
NC community, because of its close connection to the military at Ft Bragg
and Pope AFB, experiences a greater turnover of residents than most communities.
As such it is not likely that you would remain on a waiting list for a
long period. Back to Top
What
other instruments or subjects are taught?
Soundboard Studios
prides itself on doing one thing and doing it well. As such the classical
guitar is the only instrument offered.
Because we believe
in providing a sound music education pursuant to the students projected
goals, music theory is also taught. Several different computer based programs
are used to enhance the instruction. Additionally, those students aspiring
to enter collegiate schools of music are taught keyboard skills.Back
